These are small, cute plates, commonly referred to as "mamezara," which were not commonly seen in traditional lacquerware until now.
They feature a new traditional Japanese lacquer color developed with great care by Isuke, a lacquerware merchant since the Edo period, combined with animal patterns inspired by designs owned by Kyoto's woodblock print publisher "Unsodo."
The lacquer finish, known as "Mehajiki," allows the wood grain to remain visible, letting you feel the warmth and softness of the wood.
These plates can be used for serving small sweets or snacks to accompany drinks, as individual serving plates for meals, or even as coasters.
