These are small, cute plates known as "mamezara," a size not commonly seen in traditional lacquerware.
Isuke, a lacquer merchant since the Edo period, has incorporated new traditional Japanese lacquer colors with designs inspired by tools long cherished and used in Kyoto.
Finished with a lacquer technique called "mehajiki," which reveals the wood grain, these plates convey the warmth and softness of the wood.
They can be used to serve small treats or snacks with drinks, as individual plates for dishes, or even as coasters.
